Biography
Dr. Edward T. Dougherty, Jr. is known as “The Sleep
Dentist” on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the entire
Delmarva Peninsula region. He is the dentist that
patients turn to for help with their dental fears and anxieties.
Local dentists refer their patients to him for those
requiring the special services of sedation dentistry.
Dr. Dougherty received his training at the Johns Hopkins University, the University
of Virginia and the University of Maryland. Prior to entering private
practice, Dr. Dougherty served on the full-time house staff of the Johns Hopkins
Hospital. He received his anesthesia training at the Montefiore Hospital
in New York and St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Jersey. His implant surgical
training was undertaken at the world-renowned Misch Implant Institute. He
received his advanced dental cosmetic training at the prestigious LVI Institute.
Dr. Dougherty was awarded the highest recognition of “Diplomate” by the
International Congress of Oral Implantologists. This award is based upon
extensive studies and patient case presentations in advanced dental implant
and bone reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Dougherty has lectured nationally and internationally on the subjects of
sedation dentistry and emergency medicine. He has been heard regularly on
WMAL radio and interviewed frequently on WQMR radio. He has been seen
on NBC news and his sedation practice has been the subject of articles in
the Washington Post. He was voted the “Best Dentist” in the Washington, DC
metro area by readers of the Bethesda magazine. Dr. Dougherty was recently
featured on the nationally syndicated TV Show, The Ultimate Makeover.
Dr. Dougherty maintains a private practice of IV Sedation Dentistry in Ocean
City, MD. He serves as an examiner for the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners
evaluating dentists who apply for sedation permits. He is also an
Adjunct Professor in the School of Dentistry at Loma Linda University.
Dr. Dougherty is an active member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
The ADSA is an association of more than 5,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. Dr. Dougherty is recognized as a Master
in the College of Sedation Dentistry. This honor has been bestowed on only
145 members of the ADSA.
He annually travels nationally and internationally to provide charitable care
to some of the most needy citizens of the world.
